Denbigh’s strength secure a close victory
Denbighshire Development Gala, Sunday 7th June 2009, Ruthin Leisure Centre.
On Sunday it was Ruthin’s turn to host Denbigh & Rhyl in the development gala. Once again Denbigh took the biggest squad and gave several “rookies” their 1st taste of competitive gala swimming. The kids were all fine but some of our parents got themselves in a right state!
Despite Ruthin’s confidence, Denbigh were determined to give their all and retain the Ruthin Trophy, or go for the “Threepeat” as we call it.
Only the week before these three clubs had combined strengths to compete as a county team in the National League. Familiarity certainly has not bred contempt. There is mutual respect between all the swimmer and a real camaraderie which made this gala very special. Congratulations to all three club coaches and officials for working hard to develop this spirit.
On the day Denbigh’s strength in depth from Maddie to Arran was enough to secure a close victory and Gala captains Curig and Elin Brady picked up the trophy, to take back home to the Dragons trophy cabinet.
Dragons well represented at this prestigious gala
Junior Development Meet, Llandudno Aquatics Centre, Saturday 6th June 2009
Denbigh Dragons Swim Club were very well represented at this prestigious gala. Over 160 swimmers from across North Wales competed in the Aquatic Pentathlon. This was a gruelling day long gala from 8.30am to 7.00pm. In each age group swimmers competed in the four individual strokes plus the Medley for a combined time.
Denbigh can be very proud that every single one of our swimmers came home with a medal. Pick of the bunch was Curig Brady who came 3rd overall, with only 2 seconds splitting the top three swimmers.
Again we came home with a hatful of P.B.’s. Well Done, Jonah, Jack, Steffan, Lois, Curig, Stephen, Annie.
Congratulations to the Denbighshire team
National Swimming League, Saturday 30th May 2009, Llandudno Aquatics Centre
Congratulations to the Denbighshire team that crushed all before them to win the 1st heat of the National League, Northern region.
Six months of hard training and a fantastic team spirit saw County swimmers from Denbigh, Rhyl and Ruthin, combine to beat strong teams from across North Wales and significantly last years National League winners Wrexham.
This was a tremendous effort from Denbighshire and such a blow to Wrexham, that the Wrexham team later withdrew from the league altogether – not prepared to be beaten again. This is a shame and really does send out the wrong message to their swimmers.
But we focus on the future and look forward to going head to head against Llandudno (Swim Conwy), Bangor (Swim Gwynedd) and Buckley (Swim Flintshire), plus others in the next league heat.
Denbigh Dragons squad members in the team were, Leah, Emily, Anna, Annie, Ffion, Tom, Jake, Steffan.
Denbigh hammer home their Excellence .....
DENBIGH POOL - SUNDAY 29 MARCH 2009
On a bright sunny Sunday afternoon in Denbigh the Denbighshire Development Gala came of age.
Denbigh, Rhyl and Ruthin Swim Clubs each year take turns at hosting and competing in these friendly and very competitive swimming galas.
Over the last 3 months the three clubs have been combining their talents and training together each week, to form a Denbighshire team. On Sunday each the team managers took the opportunity to develop their club swimmers further, and we were delighted to see all teams with swimmers taking part in their 1st galas.
Swimmers, coaches, officials and family packed Denbigh pool and raised the roof with very vocal support for every single swimmer.
The competition matched the support and at the halfway stage there were only four points between the teams. The lead changed hands several times as the young swimmers produced a string of P.B's. At the end of the individual races and relays there was only 3 points in it and it came down to who the Cannon.
Teams formed by a boy & girl from each age group swam in the final relay. Denbigh lead from start to finish and at last got there hands on the splendid Denbigh Silver Cup.
Special thanks go to the officials, organisers and leisure centre staff for a great swim meet.
The camaraderie and spirit fostered throughout Denbighshire competitive swimming is fantastic and bodes extremely well for the future of the sport.
